One never knows when one creates something new what that new thing could become. Early in 1988, Robert Shea, Michael Shea and Debbie Jones, as the Thursday, Friday and Saturday night deejays at Graceland (Vancouver's ground-breaking nightclub), were handing out playlists of the music they were playing on their respective nights.
Never being the types to settle for routine, they combined them all together and took advantage of the club's office photocopying capabilities, producing a folded 11x17 sheet of pink paper that had four pages of club info - their music charts, upcoming events, and a blurb about what was coming in the next issue. Thus, in May 1988, the first issue of Discotext was out.
This book contains every single page from every single issue, from the above-mentioned 4 page pink hand-out of spring '88, to the 32 page, 10,000 copy final issue of November 1990. Involving everyone from the club bartenders, coat-checkers, local artists, door staff, club patrons and fellow deejays, Discotext documented what was happening in music, art, fashion, performance and more during a time when club culture and electronic dance music was just starting to explode.
This book documents all that.
